School of Biological and Chemical Engineering
The School of Biological and Chemical Engineering (BCE) consists of 4 academic institutions, namely, the Institute of Polymer Materials and Engineering, the Institute of Bioengineering, the Institute of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering, and the Laboratory Center for Biological and Chemical Engineering Education. It offers 4 undergraduate majors of Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Polymer Materials and Engineering. It has established a number of joint laboratories or R&D centers in collaboration with enterprises. |
Among its 53 full-time faculty members 14 are professors, 24 associate professors, the majority of whom have oversea studying or working experience. 1 expert enjoys special allowance from the State Council, 2 have been selected into Zhejiang “1,000 Talents Plan”, 12 into Zhejiang “151 Talents Project”, and so forth. 4 renowned scholars at home and abroad have joined BCE as the guest professors.
BCEhas been concentrating on the development of the “Chemical Engineering and Technology” discipline, which has been successfully listed as the Provincial-Level First-class Discipline (B Category) and City-Level Key Discipline (A Category) for the “13thFive-Year Plan” period. So far 4 distinctive research directions have been formed:
Chemical Engineering: focus on green chemical engineering, with 3 key areas of new chemical engineering materials, pharmaceutical intermediates and environmental protection.
Biochemical Engineering: focus on life health, with key scientific research areas of industrial microbial breeding, fermentation engineering, biocatalysis, biological separation engineering, etc.
Applied Chemistry: focus on drug design, synthesis and development, with distinctive features in natural active ingredient extraction, drug design, synthesis, etc.
Material Chemical Engineering: focus on polymer chemical engineering, with key scientific research areas of advanced flame-retardant polymer materials, functional polymer materials, rubber and plastic material modification, etc.
During the 2015-2019 period,BCEundertook 13 National Natural Science Foundation programs (including 1 major program), 12 provincial and ministerial projects and 33 municipal projects (including 4 major projects of Ningbo “Science and Technology Innovation 2025”), and received CNY 80 million research funds from external entities. Faculty members have published 183 scientific research papers, including 132 SCI-indexed papers, 5 highly cited ones on ESI and 3 ZJU-100-collected ones. They have brought home 2 second prizes and 1 third prize of Zhejiang Natural Science Award, 1 second prize of Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress Award, and 82 authorized invention patents.
During the 2015-2019 period, faculty members published 87 papers on educational research and reform, edited 7 textbooks, had 11 educational research projects approved at or above the municipal level, and won 10 teaching awards at or above the municipal level. In addition, they also won 1 second prize for the provincial-level research achievements of university lab work, 1 first prize for the city-level outstanding achievements of college teaching, etc.
Currently there are765 undergraduates and 30 graduates studying atBCE. The School endeavors to improve students performance in the scientific research, increase their innovation and entrepreneurial capabilities. In the past five years, 17 national and 9 provincial projects dedicated to students’ academic work 50 awards at the national level and 190 awards at or above the provincial level have been won. Undergraduates have published 32 papers as the first author, including 3 EI-collected and 2 SCI-collected ones.
BCE values international partnership. It fully supports its faculty members to work as visiting scholars at institutions abroad, and invite oversea scholars for academic exchanges. The School has established a 3+1+1 student exchange program in collaboration with Queen's University Belfast in the United Kingdom, and various short-term overseas exchange programs involving student visits to institutions of higher learning in the United Kingdom, Poland, Japan, etc.
Always actively promoting local cooperation, BCE has seized the favorable opportunity in Ningbo for the flourishing industrial development of biomedicine and new materials. It has built itself into one of its kind in fields like in-vitro diagnosis, natural drugs, protein drugs and flame-retardant materials. In cooperation with more than 120 enterprises in the past 5 years, BCE received research funds of nearly CNY 60 million, transferred 17 patented technologies (total technology transfer exceeding CNY 15 million).
