NINGBOTECH UNIVERSITY

School of Computing and Data Engineering

Welcome to the School of Computing and Data Engineering (SCDE). SCDE is at the forefront of research, teaching and learning across the computer and data science and engineering.

Our People

SCDE has 60 faculty members and 48 full-time academic staff, including 7 professors and 13 associate professors. Currently, there are more than 1100 undergraduates and 40 postgraduates in the school. SCDE has Ningbo City's life-oriented intelligent big data engineering application innovation team, Ningbo Key Laboratory of Optimization and Control Methods and Application Laboratories, Ningbo Smart Agriculture Research Institute, China-Australia Joint Research Center, etc. SCDE conducts in-depth research in data analysis and processing, internet application technology, agricultural big data and Internet of Things, and smart medical technology aligned with industries and businesses. Our partnerships with industry are fundamental to the success of our students and future research innovation. Collaboration with local governments, industries has resulted in a number of commercial collaborations which provide a pathway for students to work on real projects with industry partners. Moreover, the use of QR-code to trace a person’s health condition in prevention of corona-virus was first proposed and implemented by a research team of SCDE, which was fully adopted, extended and promoted nationwide later on.

SCDE has established cooperative relationships with more than 10 internationally renowned universities such as the University of Melbourne and Queen's University, which has greatly promoted the international level and sustainable development of the school.

Teaching: Practical Learning

The School of Computing and Data Engineering (SCDE) offers a hands-on study programs, underpinned by cutting-edge research and innovative teaching, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. SCDE has 4 programs for undergraduate: Data science and big data technology, Computer science and technology, Software engineering, Information and computing (Applied Mathematics). We understand the requirements of industry and are continually advancing our programs. Our programs are designed in consultation with industry through our Industry Advisory Board to ensure our graduates have the skills and knowledge needed for the fast-paced, exciting world of technology.

Our students are also supported in their studies with an extensive range of state-of-the-art facilities including dedicated specialist laboratories, studios and the latest in software and equipment. All the students are encouraged to participate actively in the international competitions from the second year in the school. Hitherto, our students have won more than 600 provincial and above awards in various competitions such as ACM Programming Contest, National Software Design and Development Contest, and International Mathematical Modeling Contest. More importantly, the students from our school won the 27th place in the 37th ACM Global Finals. A large number of our students have been employed by well-known organizations such as China Telecom, China Mobile, Kingsoft, Baidu, Shanda, JD.COM, Zhejiang University, and Alibaba.

Innovative Research

The staffs within School are widely published and attract highly competitive grants and industry sponsorship. In 2019, each faculty member attracted more than $US57000 worth research or industry grants in average. Moreover, the use of QR-code to trace a person’s health condition in prevention of corona-virus was first proposed and implemented by a research team of SCDE, which was fully adopted, extended and promoted nationwide later on.

We value research as a fundamental form of learning. Success requires collaboration, not just between scholars, but with community, industry and government. SCDE has three major research groups:

Computer and Data Science Groupdevelops innovative solutions that create value from data, across all stages of its life cycle, to facilitate better decisions and gain deeper knowledge, researches and develops innovative and practical solutions for business, scientific and social applications in the realm of big data. This group encompasses a variety of research strengths including: Data and knowledge engineering, surveillance, complex and intelligent systems, and e-Health services.

Computer Vision and AI Groupmainly focuses on developing fundamental theories and algorithms in the field of computer graphics, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. The research work includes a variety of topics, such as face recognition, image retrieval, semantic analysis of 2D images, 3D shapes, or 3D point cloud, deep learning, etc. Applying those algorithms to industrial manufacturing and smart cities for increasing productivity or improving management efficiency is also an important part of the research work.

Digital Pathology Groupis to develop technologies that make pathology workflows much faster and more efficient. The project utilizes qualified data compression methods, computer vision, machine learning and pattern recognition methods to create digital pathology scanning systems. The research covers the fields of image analysis and bio-signal analysis, with a focus on developing new tools to improve data acquisition, data reconstruction and analysis from medical images and stream data.
