School of International Studies

School of International Studies consists of institutions like the Institute of Foreign Languages, the Institute of Applied Linguistics and Ningbo Research Center for International Cultures.

Currently a cohort of 715 undergraduates are pursuing their studies in three majors of English, Business English and Japanese. Besides, 2 graduates are cultivated jointly by the School and Zhejiang University. The faculties are also responsible for English teaching for whole university pupils.

Professor Wang Xiaolu, doctoral supervisor of Zhejiang University, serves as Dean of the School. She and Professor Liu Haitao from Zhejiang University have been appointed by the School as Professor of Excellence and Leading Professor of “9211 Project” respectively. The School has a cohort of academically promising faculty members who are so passionate about teaching, among whom 71 are full-time teachers. There are 5 professors, 17 associate professors, 2 doctoral supervisors and 3 master’s supervisors. 31 teachers have already obtained or are currently pursuing for their doctoral degrees. Most have once studied or worked overseas, and every year some are selected to well-known universities at home and abroad as visiting scholars. In addition, the School also boasts 6 highly-educated foreign experts (4 of whom have doctoral degrees) from Europe, Japan, etc. for teaching.

Faculty members have been engaged in the editing of more than 20 textbooks, and seen nearly 10 provincial educational research and reform projects and municipal teaching achievements. Thanks to their efforts, English major has been regarded as the major with characteristics of the University. Students’ diploma obtaining rate, graduation rate and employment rate are as high as 94%, 94% and 95% respectively. The School is equipped with 15 laboratories including simultaneous interpretation lab and networked multimedia language lab. With a total area of nearly 1,700 square meters, those labs have a seat capacity of more than 800. In addition, there are software and hardware supporting facilities, say campus FM radio station and networked self-learning platform. A joint scientific research team, set up by students from the School of Foreign Language Studies and the School of Media and Design, has started a project of “Language Cognition and Cultural Communication Laboratory”. The School has established 15 internship bases in relevant enterprises and institutions, which have created favorable conditions for students to learn foreign languages and strengthen their professional skills. The reference room has subscribed to more than 20 kinds of academic journals of linguistics.

The School is promoting academic performance through activities like biweekly forum, reading club, academic week, etc. The research team led by Professor Liu Haitao published a commentary in a SCI journal with high impact factor. In the past five years, there has been 1 National Social Science Foundation program, 9 provincial and ministerial projects and 12 municipal projects. Faculty members have published 90 or so papers in academic journals including those indexed by SSCI and EI, and produced 10 academic monographs.

The School has established partnership with more than 20 universities at home and abroad such as the University of British Columbia (Canada), the University of Ottawa (Canada), Queen's University of Belfast (Britain), Western Sydney University (Australia), the University of Sydney (Australia), Nazareth College (US), Nishogakusha University (Japan), Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (Poland), Zhejiang University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, etc., and carried out exchanges and mutual visits of various forms. The School has also introduced quality foreign teachers from English Language Institute (ELIC), and employed renowned scholars at home and abroad as part-time professors. It has also set up a “ Tutor Team for Realizing Dream” to help students who want to study abroad, built “Yangming Academy” for Chinese cultural experience and dissemination, and formed a student volunteer team for foreign affairs to improve service quality.

Being the testing site for professional examinations like Business English Certificates (BEC), offering training and service about overseas learning, and undertaking translation tasks in all fields and at all levels, the School has already become an important base to serve local socio-economic development and nurture English experts.
