School of Materials Science and Engineering
The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) was established in 2021 as part of the university’s endeavor to meet the country’s need to develop emerging industries of strategic importance and to explore innovative breakthroughs at the frontiers of new materials. The school boasts three research institutes: the Institute of Fire Safety Materials, the Institute of Energy and Electronic Materials, and the Institute of Polymer Materials and Engineering. It offers two undergraduate majors: Polymer Materials and Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. |
As of the end of 2022, the school had 33 full-time faculty members, among whom 13 were professors and eight associate professors. 94% obtained their doctorate and more than half had overseas education experience. Among the faculty, there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, three experts receiving the special allowance of the State Council, four selected for key talent projects at the provincial level, and 65% selected for the talent projects at or above the municipal level. The school also boasts three innovation teams at the municipal level.
Focusing on the national strategy of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality”, the school is actively engaged in basic research and applied technology development in such distinctive fields as energy and electronic materials, fire safety materials, and polymer-based functional materials. It has undertaken and completed major projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Zhejiang Natural Science Foundation, among others, with research results winning numerous awards including the second prize of Zhejiang Natural Science Award and ten papers selected as ESI highly cited papers. With regard to the industry-education-research integration, the school has established one industrial college in collaboration with enterprises (industrial associations) and two joint labs, led nearly 80 research projects commissioned by enterprises or government agencies, including four projects each with a fund of more than 1 million yuan, authorized 50 invention patents, and successfully commercialized seven research results, generating significant economic and social benefits.
Applying the development philosophy of “cultivating virtue, pursuing innovation, pressing ahead, and seeking excellence", the school is striving to build a materials discipline that is first-class in the province and influential nationwide.
