On March 5th, several campus activities related to enhancing public welfare were organized by students from the School of Foreign Language Studies. Volunteers from the Red Cross of Ningbo also gave students free blood type tests. The purpose of these activities was to call on students to learn from the spirit of Lei Feng, a People's Liberation Army soldier known for his “selfless service to the people” who died in 1962 at the age of 22. In 1963, Chairman Mao initiated a nationwide campaign to follow the soldier’s example of selflessness, dedication and other moral values. Students participated enthusiastically in these activities, saying that it was high time they did something to demonstrate their sense of social responsibility. Some students thought that they should focus first of all on their studies, but agreed to participate in volunteer activities in honor of Lei Feng when possible.
