Using “Tank Spirit” to Achieve One’s Dreams

When the recent severe earthquake occurred in Ya’an city, Sichuan province, a girl once again devoted herself to the rescue effort, guiding the volunteers who rushed to Ya’an city from different areas of China to carry out rescue work. Her name is Jiang Yinfeng. This was her second time to take part in earthquake rescue work. On May 12, 2008, she witnessed the terrible earthquake in Wenchuan city, Sichuan province, and she was among the first volunteers to conduct rescue work on site.

Jiang Yinfeng graduated in 2005 from the NIT School of Foreign Language Studies. Unlike many college students who chose to work at well-paying companies, Jiang gave up a chance for employment with a famous foreign trade company, deciding instead to become a volunteer to serve people in the western region of China. Some of her friends thought it was unwise for her to give up the goal of pursuing a lucrative career, and her family members also did not support her decision. However, Jiang was resolute in her determination. She had long been eager to support the development of western China, and she believed that to enroll in a volunteer program was the best way for her to realize her dream.

Jiang has had to confront many challenges in her work as a volunteer, but she has always been able to overcome these difficulties with her strong will. As she wrote in her blog, she wanted to “be like a tank,” running over any obstacle in her path.

Because of her outstanding work, she has been awarded many honors. In 2009, she became one of the five representatives of volunteers to be granted an audience by the leaders of the Central Committee in the Great Hall of the People.

Despite her achievements, Jiang has a peaceful mind. She says she is just an ordinary person, and she is happy to devote her life to serving others. She also encourages college students to stick to their goals and beliefs, and to realize their dreams by overcoming all obstacles with a “tank spirit”.
