The two-day “STEM Summer Camp” officially kicked off in NingboTech on August 22nd, which welcomed over 140 high school students from Jiangshan Senior High School in Ningbo. A total of six laboratories (including two key labs at the municipal level) of three schools, namely, School of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, School of Civil Engineering and Architecture as well as School of Biological and Chemical Engineering, were opened to students with professors, associate professors and project leaders of each school instructing on various experiments.

Professor MAO Jianghong from School of Civil Engineering and Architecture introduced the experimental principles and research process to the students full of curiosity. They carried out the experiment of Nessler’s Reagent Colorimetry to calculate the amount of ammonium nitrogen in water in the Key Laboratory of Water Pollution Control and Resource Utilization. They went on to visit professional equipment such as CNC lathes, and try to carve their desired texts or patterns by using laser engraving instruments at the Engineering Training Center of the School of Mechanical and Energy Engineering.

The camp left students in awe of science with some saying labs were places where operators couldn’t be more meticulous and that they learned a lot from the two-day event.

NingboTech, as one of the first batch of pilot schools for application-oriented education in Zhejiang Province, organized the “STEM Summer Camp” which integrated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. By fully leveraging scientific and technological resources in colleges and universities, activities like this camp offer high school students excellent opportunities to do experiments and conduct researches. They can also better prepare themselves for the upcoming college entrance examinations and have a more sensible career planning when they experience for themselves what the university life is all about.
