Students from the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture have taken home one top prize, one second prize and two third prizes as the results of the third National Undergraduates Structural Design Information Technology Competition were recently unveiled.

The Competition, hosted by the Education Committee of China Civil Engineering Society and organized by South China University of Technology and Shenzhen GSCAD Software with the support of other entities including Tsinghua University, aims to reform the training mode of civil engineering majors, promote the BIM (Building Information Modeling) practical teaching, and cultivate innovative and highly skilled college students. A total of 2,244 teams from 360 colleges and universities nationwide participated in the competition.

This year's competition asked contestants to design assembled monolithic steel-concrete frame structure for middle school buildings. Contestants were expected to decide upon the structure according to the building plan and structural design parameters, create the 3D information structural model by using Revit software and calculate the structure by using GSCAD BIM top-down design system.

The impressive results couldn’t have been achieved without unremitting efforts made by both the instructors and the students. Through this competition, valuable experience has been accumulated for professional teaching, competition preparation and application-oriented ability training.
