On March 12th, Dr. Piotr Blumczyski, Queens University of Belfast gave a lecture entitled “Painting, Dressing, Planting and Cooking—Images of Translation across Centuries”. All the juniors of the School of Foreign Languages attended the lecture.
Dr. Blumczyski briefly introduced some core concepts in the field of translation studies, such as the essence of translation, the connection between original text and target text and the relationship between the author and the translator. In his lecture, translation is compared to cooking, painting, dressing and planting, and the translator is the chef, painter, tailor and gardener. However, Dr. Blumczyski said, translation is an intellectual game as well as a sweaty physical exercise requiring translators concentration.
The students were absorbed in the interesting questions, amazing pictures and various body languages Piotr used. Laughters broke out at times in the conference room. The lecture is absolutely a brilliant feast of wisdom. After the lecture, Piotr present students the details about MTI in the School of Modern Languages, Queens University Belfast.
