The finals of the Foreign Language Sketch Contest were held on January 6, 2015 at Kezhen Auditorium. In attendance were honorable NIT leaders, distinguished teachers, and classmates and friends of the contestants.

The theme of this years competition was ;Time Travel. Four groups performed short dramatic sketches in different styles to provide an entertaining evening for the audience. To showcase students creativity, the organizers introduced a new challenge: ad-lib performance (from the Latin ;ad libitum meaning ;at ones pleasure or ;as one likes). Following the ad-lib format, each group received a random subject from the contest host. They then were allowed only five minutes to prepare and perform a sketch based on their subject. Needless to say, this put group members under considerable pressure to cooperate and “think on their feet” in order to achieve a creative and entertaining result.

Students from English 125 performed a sketch entitled Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land, which told the story of an eternal relationship between two lovers. English 124 staged Todays Happiness, an intimate look at the warm and sweet relationships between the members of a family. Business English 131 ad-libbed a sketch of the classical drama My Fair Lady. English 121 performed a sketch entitled Loop, which sought to reveal some of the mysteries of cause-and-effect in our world. Each groups sketch exhibited ingenious moments of dialogue as well as very creative acting and stage design. The vivid and enthusiastic foreign-language performances won great applause from the audience and judges.

The time at Kezhen Auditorium seemed to fly by. Suddenly, the contest was over and the judges were awarding prizes: English 121 – first prize; English 124 – second prize; English 125 and Business English 131 – tied for third prize!

This years Foreign Language Sketch Contest provided a wonderful opportunity for students to gain practical experience in a high-pressure, creativity-oriented competition. The many things they learned about speech, acting, stagecraft, and the direction of short dramatic sketches will certainly enrich their lives going forward.
