On March 13th, a group of NIT students joined in a charity event being co-sponsored by CCTV and the internet company, Tencent. The students are members of a team of volunteers called ;Sunflower Sports, which was established at NIT in August of 2013.

In addition to its primary business, Tencent sponsors a charity organization called Weixin. This charity, together with the Sunflower Sports team, came up with the idea of a program called “Lets Volunteer to Teach with Fengshu!” to provide sports equipment and training to children in less-developed areas of the country. Fengshu, the famous CCTV host, agreed to volunteer his time in order to attract attention and to gain the support of television viewers as well as netizens.

The Sunflower Sports team was co-founded by Jin Miao and Wang Han of the School of Media and Design, Guo Liting, from the School of Management, and Chen Jiang of the School of Electronic Information Engineering. They invited Song Haix, President of Shangri La Capital, Ltd., and the CCTV host, Fengshu, to be the directors of their volunteer organization.

Although quite new, the Sunflower Sports team has already been recorded online by the popular Baidu Encyclopedia. Their activities have made possible the donation of sports equipment to six primary schools in Sichuan, Guizhou, and Zhejiang. How do they do it? Their main job is to raise funds from companies and organizations, and then to donate these funds as appropriate to children in need.

With proceeds from the ;Teach with Fengshu program, Tencent is planning to subsidize sports programs at the Chongqing Miaozi Village School and the Litou Village School. Fengshu has generously agreed to join with the NIT Sunflower Sports team in teaching PE and related sports subjects to these students for one week this spring.
