Opening Ceremony for Freshmen and New Post-graduate Students Held at NIT

On the evening of August 26th, the opening ceremony for this years freshman class was held on NITs north athletic field. Vice Secretary of the Party Committee of Zhejiang University, Yan Jianhua, President Jin Weiliang, Secretary of the Party Committee, Fei Yingqin, Vice President Yu Chunming, Yang Jiangang, Zhen Di, and Vice Secretary of the Party Committee, Chen Xiaolan, attended the ceremony. Also attending were leaders of the schools departments and new-student tutors. Huang Guangjie, Vice Secretary of the Party Committee, hosted the conference.

The Vice Secretary of the Party committee of Zhejiang University, Yan Jianhua, extended a warm welcome to all and best wishes to the freshmen.

President Jin Weiliang then said a few words to the audience: “Since the day NIT was founded, we have been focusing on its development. The schools overall competence has risen sharply, and it is now ranked first among independent institutes.” President Jin also expressed his sincere hope that this years freshmen will learn much through thought and practice, and eventually become successful members of society with high ideals, morality, and competence.

As a teacher representative, Professor Zhang Kefeng, a San Jiang Scholar, delivered a speech entitled, The Real Study of Life Begins on the University Campus, in which he related some of his personal experiences. He then encouraged the students by saying, “Where there is extraordinary confidence and self-esteem, practical ability and unique spirit, there is genius.”

Student representatives Zhou Xiang and Wang Kaili also delivered speeches at the conference.

On the morning of September 8th, the opening ceremony for new post-graduates was held in NC202. The ceremony was hosted by Vice President Zhen Di. Attending were President Jin Weiliang, Vice President Zhen Di, and leaders from cooperating universities. Participating in the ceremony were authorities from various schools, student and faculty representatives, and this years group of post-graduate students.

President Jin extended a warm welcome to the post-graduates. He spoke briefly about the schools history and development, its many achievements in research, its key disciplines and key laboratory development, and its program for the further academic and personal development of post-graduate students.

A Vice President from one of the cooperating universities congratulated the post-graduates on their enrollment at NIT and made three requests of them: First, be honest and value academic integrity. Second, master the methods of learning and enhance your ability to innovate. Third, focus on all-round development. He expressed his hope that students will realize their dreams for the future and live happy lives in these challenging times.

In closing, Professor Chen Junhua, representative of the new-student tutors, delivered a speech. He encouraged the students to continue to improve themselves, broaden their knowledge, set high personal goals, and maintain their physical fitness.
