The Ningbo Institute of Technology was recently ranked first among Chinas independent colleges. The Top Ten Chinese Independent Colleges Ranking in 2013 was released as part of a nationwide Chinese Universities Evaluation. Zhejiang University City College (ZUCC) ranked second, and Beijing Normal University, Zhuhai (BNUZ) ranked third.

The ranking method for independent Chinese colleges requires that they meet at least three of the following four criteria: (1) It must rank in the top 25 of all independent colleges for total number of bachelor degrees awarded. (2) It must rank in the ;top 25 in programs that enhance the innovativeness of teachers. (3) It must rank in the ;top 25 in terms of the overall academic performance of its teachers. (4) It must have programs in place that cultivate masters degree graduates in cooperation with other universities.

NIT President Jin Weilang has stated that the key to NITs achieving the first-place ranking only 12 years after its founding has been its persistent efforts to enhance its core competitiveness. In addition, phased development strategies have led to the creation of high-level, applied studies programs under the guidance of the NIT motto: “To cultivate applied talent, promote scientific research, and serve society.”

Wu Shulian, an expert in the field of Chinese university evaluation, points out how difficult it is to receive a top ranking among the countrys high-level independent colleges. In 2013, only nine colleges were nominated, and only seven of these colleges were ranked in the ;top 10. Wu also notes that NITs number one ranking clearly demonstrates that it has become a truly advanced and outstanding college.
