On November 4, 2012, students from NITs School of Information Science and Engineering participated in the 37th ACM-ICPC(ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest) regional contest in Hangzhou with great success. The FBH team, which consisted of Li Xiangwei (computer class 093), Zhang Huidong (computer class 091), and Shao Lu (computer class 102), bested students from Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University and other well-known universities, winning the gold medal as well as qualifying for the 37th ACM-ICPC World Finals. In addition, the POAD team, consisting of Xie Chuan (computer class 091), Zheng Jiatao (computer class 102), and Shao Yi (telecom class 102), won the bronze medal.
This event marks the first time that NIT has qualified for the ACM-ICPC World Finals. The World Finals will be held from June 30 through July 4, 2013 in St. Petersburg Russia. This annual program design competition is attended by 100 colleges from several continents. The ACM-ICPC competition, which is organized by the ACM (Association of Computing Machinery), has a long history in the international computer industry. It is the highest-level international collegiate programming contest, and aims to teach students to make full use of computer technology, as well as to develop their ability to analyze and solve programming problems.
First held in 1970, the ACM-ICPC has become the worlds most prestigious international computer competition for college students proficient at computer programming, especially for the students majoring in computer science and software design. It is also a demonstration of university-level computer education, and attests to the skill of student programmers. The competition promotes communication between industry and educational institutions, as well as the ideals of service, friendship, and peaceful global development.
The ACM team of NIT, led by Cai Minglun, Guo Xinyou, and other teachers have devoted themselves to participating in this event over the years, and many students have benefited from their efforts. After many years of hard work, our school made an historic breakthrough this year. Following their gold medal win, the FBH team has now begun intense preparations for the World Finals to be held next year.
