Yang Deren Appointed First President after ZJUNIT’s Upgrading into a Provincial-Level University

On April 24, Prof. Dr. Yang Deren, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Cheung Kong Professor at Zhejiang University, was appointed President of Zhejiang University Ningbo Institute of Technology (ZJUNIT) after Ministry of Education approved its upgrading into a public undergraduate university at the provincial level in January 2020. The new team of leadership was also announced at the conference held in the Kezhen Auditorium.

Prof. Dr. Yang Deren received his bachelor in 1985 and his Ph.D. degree in 1991 from the School of Materials Science and Engineering (State Key Laboratory of Silicon Materials) at Zhejiang University. He was promoted to be an associate professor in 1993 in the post-doctoral station of Zhejiang University, during which time he spent one yearas visiting scholar at the Institute of Metal Materials, Tohoku University, Japan. In early 1995, he went to Technical University of Freiberg in Germany as a visiting researcher. He was promoted to be a full professor by Zhejiang University in 1997. At the beginning of 1998, he returned to China to work in the Institute of Semiconductor Materials (State Key Laboratory of Silicon Materials), School of Materials Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University. Since 1998, he has assumed the position of Director of the State Key Laboratory of Silicon Materials, and then the Director of Semiconductor Materials Institute at Zhejiang University in 2003. He was named an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007.

In 2000, he was promoted to be a Cheung Kong Professor by the Ministry of Education of China. He received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in China in 2002. He was awarded as special expert of Zhejiang province in 2011. He served as the chief scientist of 973 project in the field of silicon-based optoelectronic light-emitting materials and devices in 2007 and 2013. He won the Innovation Research Group Project of NSFC in 2017. Since 2008, he has also been a member of the National Major Science and Technology Special Expert Group.

As the first contributor, he has won two second prizes of the National Natural Science Award, one second prize of National Technological Invention, in addition to four first, six second and six third prizes of science and technology awards at the ministerial and provincial level. He also won, among others, the National May 1st Labor Medal, China Youth Science and Technology Award, National Excellent Science and Technology Workers, Zhejiang “Ten Pioneers of the Year in 2006”. He has published over 840 research papers in international peer reviewed journals which have been cited more than 16,100 times.

He has long been engaged in the research of semiconductor silicon materials used for VLSI, solar photovoltaic silicon materials, silicon-based optoelectronic materials and nano silicon semiconductor materials. He was principal investigator of National Basic Research Program (973 Program), National High-Tech Research and Development Program (863 Program), National Key Technology Research and Development Program, key projects of National Natural Science Foundation, Key Science and Technology Projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Province.
