Students from the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture havev brought home one top prize, two second prizes and one third prize on June 30th when the results of the 2nd National Undergraduates Structural Design Information Technology Competition were unveiled.

The Competition, hosted by the Education Committee of China Civil Engineering Society and co-supported by eight entities including Tsinghua University, and sponsored by South China University of Technology and Shenzhen GSCAD Software, aims to reform the training mode of civil engineering students in colleges and universities, promote the BIM (Building Information Modeling) practical teaching, and improve the scientific and technological innovation ability of college students. A total of 2,140 teams from 341 colleges and universities participated in the competition.

This year’s competition asked contestants to design high-rise fabricated reinforced concrete structures. Contestants needed to decide the structural layout according to the building plan and structural design parameters, and then calculate the structure by using GSCAD BIM top-down design system, roll out assembly designs of part of the floor, and finally submit calculation and construction drawings.During the half-year-long preparations for the Competition, teachers and students devoted themselves wholeheartedly and overcame inconvenience caused by the epidemic. The instructors held many meetings for exchanges and discussions, while students went through online training, learned the software and familiarized themselves with the norms and rules, and expanded their knowledge constantly. Finally, the team composed of senior students got excellent results in the Competition, and won recognition for their graduation designs.

Through this Competition, valuable experience has been accumulated for professional education, competition preparation and application ability training.
