Prof. ZOU Zhigang, physicist, expert in materials science, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and fellow of the World Academy of Sciences, delivered a speech on space technology on September 23rd. The event was presided over by HU Zhengyu, Secretary of the Communist Party Committee of NingboTech University.

Academician ZOU, doctoral supervisor, Director of Nanjing University's Eco-Materials and Renewable Energy Research Center and Chief Scientist of National Basic Research Program of China, has long been engaged in study of new energy materials and has achieved many original results in design theory, core equipment and application of energy and environmental materials including the new generation of photocatalytic materials.

ZOU started his speech with the origin of mankind and space exploration in the future and put forth the concept of extraterrestrial artificial photosynthesis, a technique which transforms water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and fuel in an in-situ, accelerated and manageable way by simulating photosynthesis of green plants so as to sustain life in space. The technique, if applied successfully, will have a positive impact on the construction of space labs and "Tiangong" space station. ZOU then elaborated on the significance of developing artificial photosynthesis and opportunities and challenges along the way as well.

Recalling his past experiences, he expressed gratitude to his parents, teachers, mentors and the favorable conditions he now enjoys, and expected students to cherish time and study hard and eventually contribute to China's development. He was also appointed Honorary Professor during the event.

As part of a series of events in celebration of the 20th anniversary of NingboTech, more academicians will be invited to share their views about cutting-edge technology in the near future. It's expected that teachers and students will be motivated to engage themselves in research, which will surely promote the development of the university.
